Races for Open Seats in Va. Shaping up Differently

Posted: Updated:

McLEAN, Va. (AP)- Two U.S. House seats in the northern Virginia suburbs are open for the first time in decades, but the races to succeed Republican Frank Wolf and Democrat Jim Moran are shaping up very differently.

In the heavily Democratic 8th District, a gaggle of state and local officials is looking to move up, setting up a crowded primary.

But in the 10th District, only a handful of top-tier candidates are running, with two clear front-runners, Republican state Delegate Barbara Comstock, and Democrat John Foust, a Fairfax County supervisor. Experts say Democrats want to avoid a bruising primary in the 10th District and are rallying around Foust to bolster his chances in what is expected to be a competitive race for a seat that has been in Republican hands since 1980.
