Republican Chairman Calls for Investigation of Board Appointment

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state Republican Party chairman is urging federal prosecutors to investigate Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe's appointment of a longtime GOP operative to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

Pat Mullins made the request Monday in a letter to U.S. Attorney Dana Boente.

Marcus stunned political watchers last year by endorsing McAuliffe and working for his campaign. Marcus landed the $130,000-a-year ABC post after McAuliffe took office, prompting outrage by Republicans who say it looks like a political payoff. An effort to block the appointment failed Monday in the Democratically controlled Senate.

In his letter, Mullins says Boente's office will appear politicized if it refuses to investigate McAuliffe's actions after pursuing public corruption charges against former Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell.

The federal prosecutor's office did not immediately return telephone messages.
