Proposal: Report Seeing Dead Body or Pay a Fine

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Two Republican state lawmakers from Washington County want to make it crime not to report a dead body or death.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Christopher Shank and Del. Neil Parrott, got a hearing Tuesday in Annapolis.

They say the measure was prompted by the death in August of 40-year-old Kenneth Flook of Hagerstown. Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore says Flook died at the house of a friend who then dumped the body several miles away.

Mullendore says the state medical examiner's office couldn't determine the cause of Flook's death.

The bill would require a person with personal knowledge of a death or a dead body to notify law enforcement within four hours. Violation could bring a year in prison and a $5,000 fine.
