Salisbury University's Men's tennis picks up first win of season


FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-0 sweep of Hampden-Sydney College, Wednesday afternoon on the campus of University of Mary Washington.

Junior Daniel Albers took his No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-0 over J.B. Weaver, while sophomore Eric Spangler won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1 against Fitzhugh Johnson. The pair defeated their singles opponents in the top doubles match, 8-1.

Junior Demetri Vrahnos took the No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-2, and teamed with sophomore Matthew McGaffney to take their No. 2 doubles match 8-3. McGaffney played in the No. 5 singles spot and won his match 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

Senior Shane Gunther dropped the first set of his singles contest but rallied to take the match 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. He teamed with his brother, sophomore Shanon Gunther, to take the final doubles match, 8-2.

Senior Paul Berryman rounded out the Sea Gull singles lineup, winning 6-3, 7-5 over Mitchell Swann at No. 6

The Sea Gulls are next in action on Friday, March 7, taking on Goucher College. That contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
