PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore finished their season series against UMBC this weekend with a disappointing 1-3 record.
UMES lost both games Saturday but split the Sunday double-header with the Retrievers. The Hawks won the first game 4-3, but lost the second 3-2. UMBC won the four-game season-series 3-1.
These games put the Hawks record at 3-15 on the year while UMBC improves to 12-4.
In the first Sunday game neither team scored until the fifth inning, due to some crafty bunting UMES took the lead 2-0. UMBC then responded with three runs to take the lead 3-2. In their final at-bat UMES senior, Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) delivered a triple to right-center to put the typing run on base and the game-winner at the plate. With two outs Morgan tripled to right center to bring home Gomez and gave UMES the victory 4-3.
The Hawks will host the University of Rhode Island at Lady Hawks Field in a doubleheader. The first-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
