MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wesley College Wolverines fell to the 2013 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title holder, Penn State – Altoona, in an afternoon competition in Myrtle Beach. The Wolverines now stand at 6-2 on the season.
Lily Engel kept the Lions scoreless in the first inning, forcing three fly outs in three batters. After two of her fellow Wolverines struck out, Devin Mackay shined a ray of hope getting a single in the bottom of the first but was left on base after another strike out.
Altoona had one hit in the second inning and again went scoreless. Steph Caracozza recorded the Wolverines second hit of the game but could not make it around to score.
The Lions found their stride in the third inning with three runs scored on three hits and two Wolverine errors. This proved to be enough to win Altoona went on to score another nine runs. Wesley's only senior, Ashly Bendorovich, tried to get a rally started with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning but her hit would be the last hit that the Wolverines would have in the game.
Altoona's number one pitcher, Raychel DeArmitt, was a force to be reckoned with. Last year, DeArmitt struck out 101 batters (5th in the AMCC) and in just six games this year she has recorded 25 K's.
Engel takes the loss, allowing three earned runs in the four innings that she pitched.
The Wolverines face SUNY Canton tomorrow, Thursday, March 13th at 9:30 AM.
