Del. Lawmaker Wants Veterans Designations on Driver's Licenses

DAGSBORO, Del. (WBOC) - A Sussex County lawmaker wants to put a veterans designation on the Delaware's driver's licenses. Rep. John Atkins, D-Millsboro, says his proposal will make life easier for vets.

Right now the state does offer free veteran ID cards. The DMV has had those cards for vets since 2011. But Rep. Atkins says the system is not working as well as it could. He says at most 5 percent of Delaware's almost 77,000 vets even have the cards. So he believes it's time for a change.

Many of the veterans at American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro carry a number of ID cards proving they are vets.

"It just adds so much more to your wallet," said Dennis Daniels, post commander at Post 24. "You just have to keep looking for them if you don't know where they are all the time."

"I have all cards that prove I'm this, that or whatever. It would be terrific to put it on my driver's license," Billy Hitchens, a past post commander at Post 24, said.

They like the idea of what Rep. Atkins bill would do.

"It would be a lot easier than carrying a driver's license, plus having to find their veterans ID when they go and visit these businesses," Rep. Atkins said.

Lots of businesses offer discounts to veterans.

Rep. Atkins says more than 40 states already have a veterans designation on their licenses and others are considering it.

DMV officials say while the division supports veterans, it does not support this plan. Estimates are it would cost more than $100,000 for the necessary computer modifications and license redesign.

"This would be making a fiscal commitment that would have to satisfy every license for a feature not every driver would be using." said Mike Williams, a spokesman for DMV.

"I know that is an added cost to the state. But I think it's something our veterans deserve," said Rep. Atkins.
