SALISBURY, Md.- 2014 local Jefferson Award winner Gloria Wise Cornish will join other award winners from around the country in a national ceremony being held June 17 in Washington, D.C.

Cornish was one of 10 local Jefferson Award winners honored back in March at an awards ceremony held at the WBOC NewsPlex in Salisbury. A panel of three judges selected Cornish as a nominee for the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting the Local Community. Five nominees will be selected as Onassis Award winners at the national ceremony.

About Gloria Cornish

For many years, Gloria Cornish has been an advocate for children and families and people in need. Her list of volunteer activities and accomplishments is quite impressive. For example, she has worked tirelessly for Cambridge's emergency cold weather shelter, regularly raising needed funds for it and making sure it has the supplies it needs. If that means she has to buy supplies out of her own pocket, she will gladly do so. She shops for and delivers necessary goods to the shelter at all hours of the day and night.

She also volunteers at local men's homeless shelter, where she serves as a volunteer coordinator. During the holidays she prepares special home-cooked meals for the shelter's residents and goes out of her way to make sure their needs are met while they are there. And her concern for the homeless does not end there. On numerous occasions, Cornish has taken into her home families and individuals in need of a place to live while attempting to get back on their feet.

Cornish is also well known for providing transportation to people who need it. She regularly drives them to work, appointments, job interviews, the grocery store, church and social services.

Cornish volunteers in other capacities as well. She regularly participates in the local annual food drive for the hungry. And for many years she served as executive director for the summer program for youth at Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church. She also served as a local Girl Scout troop leader as well as a softball coach for the Dorchester County Recreation & Parks League team for many years.

Rosetta Brown, who nominated Cornish for a Jefferson Award, described her friend as someone who cannot turn down a request for help.

"Gloria never says ‘no' to someone in need, giving her last to help someone else and often extending herself for others," Brown said.

Explaining why she volunteers so much, and so often, Cornish said, "My dad was a hard worker. He always told me, ‘You help everybody. You're no better than nobody else and nobody is better than you. You help everybody.'"

Cornish took her father's words of wisdom to heart at a young age.

"I was born to help people. I knew it as a kid," she said.

About the Judges

The judges who served on the nominating committee included Gage Thomas, a businessman who also serves as a member of the Dorchester County Commissioners; Beverley Thompson, a 2009 Jefferson Award winner, and Marty T. Neat, president and CEO of First Shore Federal Savings & Loan.
