Commercial Building Fire on Lake Street

SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury Fire Department says crews are on the scene of a multiple alarm fire at a commercial garage repair facility on Lake Street in Salisbury. Salisbury Fire Chief Rick Hoppes said the call came in around 7:45 p.m. for a structure fire. Firefighters say they were unable to enter the building because the roof collapsed, so in order to put out the fire they flooded it with water.

The chief says the owner was working inside when fire broke out, he made it out of the building without any injuries.

Rachel Canterbury said smoke could be seen billowing for miles around the Salisbury area.

"I live right down the street on 'the reservation' and we heard a lot of sirens and saw smoke coming cause it was still dusk and i figured it was this garage over here on lake street, so we just hopped in car and came over here and that's what it was," said Canterbury.  "I've seen the owner a few times. We used to walk by here everyday. I saw him and I asked him if he was ok. He got out of an ambulance. He said one of his cars caught on fire and before he knew it the fire was out of control and he just had to get out."

Salisbury Police Department says Lake Street was closed from Route 50 to King Street as firefighters worked to control the fire.  The Salisbury Fire Department also used the the fire boat to assist in putting out the fire. Fire investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire in Salisbury.
