Shorebirds Trounce Suns, 9-2

SALISBURY, Md.- The Delmarva Shorebirds won the series opener against the Hagerstown Suns by the final score of 9-2 on Monday evening. Delmarva ended a three-game losing streak against the first-place Suns with a convincing victory led by a four-run third inning.

Delmarva led early with a run in the first inning. Gregory Lorenzo jumpstarted the inning with a single and stolen base. Trey Mancini broke the ice with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Lorenzo for the game’s opening run.

Hagerstown took the lead with two runs in the second, though their advantage did not last long. Delmarva starter Austin Urban walked Craig Manuel and Estarlin Martinez to help the Suns’ inning. After an infield single, Rafael Bautista punched a two-run double down the right field line. On the play, Cody Dent injured his leg rounding third base for the Suns.

Trailing 2-1, the Shorebirds scored four runs in the third to take a lead they never relinquished. Three straight singles from Josh Hart, Justin Viele and Gregory Lorenzo tied the game. Mike Yastrzemski put Delmarva on top with a two-run triple to deep right-center. Delmarva tacked on another run with a Jeff Kemp sacrifice fly.

The Shorebirds’ strong offensive performance continued with one run in the seventh, and three more in the eighth. Yastrzemski doubled in Lorenzo to make it 6-2 after seven innings. Drew Dosch, Chance Sisco and Josh Hart each added RBI base hits in the eighth to extend the Shorebirds’ advantage.

Dylan Rheault (2-0) earned the victory for Delmarva with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Nick Pivetta (2-1) took his first loss of the year by allowing five runs in just 2 1/3 innings in the start.

Delmarva will go for the series win against Hagerstown on Tuesday evening. The Shorebirds send left-hander Steven Brault (1-1, 7.20) to the mound against Suns’ right-hander Austin Voth (0-1, 3.72). First pitch is at 7:05 pm on Tuesday.
