Del. Approves 4 New Charter Schools

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware education officials have approved four new charter schools, all in New Castle County.
The approvals by Education Secretary Mark Murphy and the State Board of Education on Thursday mark what could be a significant expansion of charters in the state with about 2,360 charter seats if all four meet enrollment targets. There are currently 11,078 students in charter schools statewide.
Freire Charter School, Delaware STEM Academy and Great Oaks Charter School are set to open in fall 2015. The Mapleton Charter School at Whitehall is set to open in 2016.
Murphy rejected an application from Pike Creek Charter School, citing financial concerns. Officials also placed two schools scheduled to open in the fall under scrutiny because of enrollment concerns and will allow an existing school to shrink enrollment targets.
