"Serious Incident" Leads to Cancellation of Popular Annual Event at DSU

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - A popular event for students at Delaware State University has been canceled in response to a serious incident on campus.

DSU's Spring Fling is an annual concert event held toward the end of the school's spring semester. But that will not be the case this year.

University officials say an incident happened this past weekend on campus that was serious enough to warrant the cancellation of Spring Fling. They wouldn't say what exactly that incident was.

But Dover Police say they responded to the campus Saturday. Cpl. Mark Hoffman, a spokesman for the department, says fraternities and sororities were having a party in the center of campus. Cpl. Hoffman says the event became disorderly, which is when both DSU and Dover police went in to deal with the crowd.

Spring Fling's cancellation has a number of students upset.

"They keep blaming us for things that are out of the whole student body's control," said Jerod Villines, a sophomore at DSU. "Because of that, they're dropping events."

There were calls all over Twitter for a protest on campus though those calls didn't come to anything. Villines says there was a town hall meeting this week for students to discuss the issue, but it didn't come to anything either.

"The priority for these kids is to study, attain knowledge and fulfill their academic aspirations," said Carlos Holmes, a spokesman for the school.

Holmes says partying is not at the top of the school's priority list.

"Our primary reason for going to Delaware State is for academics," Villines said. "Everyone knows that. But you have to have a balance of academics and social life, as well."

The school is closed now for the Easter holiday. But this will continue to be a hot topic of conversation on campus when students and staff return..
