Three Fatal Crashes In Less Than A Week In Delaware

Posted:
LAUREL, Del.- It's been a deadly 2014 on Delaware's roads, so far this year there have been 32 fatal crashes. At this time last year there were 22 fatal accidents. In less than a week, three people have died in crashes.

Many of the incidents happened at night, but drivers say they need to be alert at all times.

"I think people are being careless," Janet Lord said. "I see people rolling at stop signs and not being very watchful."

The jump in fatal crashes has some people pointing to the rise in distracted driving.

"I see people not paying attention, I see a lot of texting going on. Mainly just not paying attention," John Irlan said.

Delaware State Police are planning increased enforcement efforts in traffic and accident prone areas.

"A lot of speeding goes on in back roads, I live in the back roads and a lot of speeding goes on back there, a lot of farmers i think go a little fast, very unsafe," Wendi Wingate said.

To reduce your chance of an accident, state troopers say one of the easiest things you can do it watch that speedometer. Your risk of a crash increase by about 4% for every mile per hour more you drive.
