Cambridge Struggles With Trash Problems

Posted:
CAMBRIDGE, Md.- It's a common sight in Cambridge lately, business owners sweeping trash off the streets in front of their buildings downtown.

That trash ranges from dirt, to bottles, cigarettes, and even used diapers.  Some business owners say the city isn't doing enough to keep downtown neat.  For shoppers like Patricia Logan, it's a problem too.

"It's a mess. We have people who come in from out of town and we're very proud of this town but we can't be proud of it with dirt on the streets." said Logan.

Cambridge public works director Odie Wheeler says the streets aren't normally this bad, but all the high wind over the past couple of days is really making a mess of main street.  He says the bulk of what was seen on the streets on Wednesday and Thursday came from trash bags that blew into the street on Tuesday night.

"That's a very unusual day, but it happens.  Some of the bags had busted open, so it was a mess down there.  I called the superintendent and made an effort to get down there and clean it up." said Wheeler.

Many business owners say they miss a man named Patrick, who used to be employed by the city to sweep downtown on a daily basis.  Now, Patrick has been replaced by a street sweeping machine, which has been in the shop for warranty work for the past several weeks.  Wheeler says the sweeper will be back by Wednesday of next week and resume it's five day a week schedule.

In the meantime, Carol Levy Ruark, owner of A Few of My Favorite Things, says that business owners should step up to help if the trash is bothering them.

"You can either pick it up and make it look better, or do nothing, it's everyone's choice I guess." said Levy Ruark.

But even she says the streets were cleaner when a man named Patrick made it his job to clean the streets every day.
