Smyrna High Teacher Charged with Sexual Abuse of Student

SMYRNA, Del.- Police have arrested a 37-year-old Smyrna High School teacher accused of having a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old male student on school property.


Smyrna police said Jennifer J. Suarez, who is also of Smyrna, was taken into custody Friday afternoon on the charge of first-degree sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust.


According to police, Suarez' arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred Feb. 11 when Suarez and the student allegedly had a sexual encounter that took place on school property inside Suarez' classroom. School staffers brought the allegations of misconduct to the attention of Smyrna police officers, which began what they described as a "lengthy investigation." 

Smyrna High School's website shows Suarez is a math teacher and has been the head coach of the school's boys and girls cross country team since 2012.

Smyrna School District Superintendent, Debra Wicks released this statement to WBOC:

"State and federal law prohibits the district from discussing confidential issue. Generally speaking, however, I can say that the district thoroughly investigates with the police allegations of employee misconduct. In this case, Mrs. Suarez' resignation was accepted at the April 16th school board meeting."

Following her arrest on the aforementioned charge, Suarez was released after posting $20,000 unsecured bond pending a future court appearance.
