Va. Horse Owners Urged to Get Animals Vaccinated

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia agriculture officials are concerned that horse owners might not have their animals vaccinated because of a lack of disease activity last year.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says there was only one confirmed case of West Nile Virus and one confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in 2013.

The department says horse owners shouldn't be lulled by the lack of disease activity. It is urging them to check with their veterinarians regarding vaccinations for their animals.

The vaccines are effective for six to 12 months.

Dr. Charles Broaddus with the department's Office of Veterinary Services says owners also should check with their veterinarians regarding rabies vaccinations for their horses.
