Va. Pharmacist Loses Licenses Over Drug Dispensing

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Hanover County pharmacist has lost his state license for dispensing an excessive amount of controlled substances.

Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring says the Board of Pharmacy revoked Douglas A. Harris' license and ordered him to pay a $15,000 civil penalty.

Herring says the board's action last week stemmed from an investigation by the state and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The investigation found that Harris' pharmacy, Beaverdam Pharmacy, filled 338 prescriptions for oxycodone, hydromorphone and other controlled substances for 55 patients from Kentucky, Georgia and Florida in 2012 and 2013.

Herring says the prescriptions were written by physicians in Georgia and Florida who were being investigated. These physicians subsequently either surrendered their licenses or their licenses were suspended for inappropriate prescribing of opioid medication.
