DSU Hornets Sign Six Newcomers for Next Season

(Dover, Del.) – The Delaware State softball program announced Monday afternoon the signings of six newcomers (Khaliyah Flournory, Danielle Laube, Dominique Little, Mika Lumsden, Jessica Shalongo and Tiffany Taynor), in addition to Vanessa Washington, who signed with the Hornets in December.

Adding these young ladies as well as Vanessa Washington to our program will add depth and versatility to what we have returning for next year,” said head coach Janice Savage.  “These young ladies are already displaying the qualities we look for from our current student-athletes.”

The following is information on each recruit and a quote from Savage:

Khaliyah Flournory Infield

5-5 * Freshman

Syracuse, N.Y. * Cicero-North High School

Major: Accounting

Bio: Two-year starter… Was a part of a Class AA State Championship team in 2013… Two-time scholar athlete award winner… Born Feb. 14, 1996 in Syracuse, N.Y… Daughter of Terry and Tavores Flournory… Sister to Kachelah and Tavores II.  

Coach Savage on Khaliyah: “Khaliyah is another young lady who has untapped potential and athleticism. With the hard work from our strength and conditioning staff this fall, we feel that Khaliyah will see her game improve tremendously. She is a hard worker who is very coachable and wants to succeed. With this motivation, we feel that she will continue to get better every day.”

Danielle Laube Catcher

5-6 * Freshman

New Milford, N.J. * New Milford High School * AAU/Club Team: East Coast Tsunami

Major: Criminal Justice

Bio: Named North Jersey Media Group Athlete of the Week (May 2012)… Earned NJIC First Team All-League honors (2012)… Received Bergen County Honorable Mention recognition (2012)… Was named New Jersey Thunder AAU/Club Team Most Valuable Player (2011)… Currently serves as a sergeant at the Bergen County Sheriffs Youth Leadership Academy… In the classroom, was named to the Principal’s List in 2012… Born March 18, 1996… Daughter of Glenn and Patty Laube.  

Coach Savage on Danielle: “Danielle has improved tremendously over the past year. She has a determination to be an impact to our program both offensively and defensively. With her continued progress, we look forward to seeing her play this fall behind the plate and the positive work ethic she will bring to the field every day.”

Dominique Little Infield

5-7 * Freshman

Woodbridge, Va. * Forest Park High School * AAU/Club Team: SYA Xplosion 

Major: Graphic Design

Bio: Four-year starter at second base… During sophomore season, team was Co-District Champions, while she received Honorable Mention recognition… As a junior, earned Second Team All-District honors… Currently, is a member of the Key and Spanish Club’s… Played five seasons with the SYA Xplosion and started at shortstop for the last two … Born Oct. 8, 1996 in Alexandra, Va… Parents of Rickie and Cynthia Little… Sister to Nicole and Deandra.

Coach Savage on Dominique: “Dominique is a true raw talent. Her athleticism is the biggest asset she will bring to our program. We feel that she has a ton of potential to grow and become a staple to this program. I look forward to seeing her learn from our returner’s day in and day out and how that will help elevate her game.”

Mika Lumsden Outfield

5-11 * Freshman

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. * St. Thomas Aquinas High School * AAU/Club Team: Plantation Pressure 

Major: Undecided

Bio: Three-year varsity softball standout… Has played eight seasons with the Plantation Pressure traveling softball program… Academically, currently holds a 3.6 overall grade-point average and is a three-time Principal’s List honoree, in addition to being a member of the National Honor Society… Member of the Quill & Scroll English Honor Society. 

Coach Savage on Mika: “Mika is a great athlete as well as student. With her size and power offensively, we are excited to see what she will bring to the middle of our lineup next year.  She comes from a great academic school and will fit right in with our program goals and values.”

Jessica Shalongo Pitcher

5-9 * Freshman

Montville, N.J. * Montville Township High School * AAU/Club Team: N.J. Breakers Gold 

Major: Athletic Training – Sports Medicine

Bio: Four-year starter in softball and current Team Co-Captain… In 2011, received All-Conference and Daily Record Honorable Mention recognition … In 2012, earned Second Team All-Conference and All-County honors… As a junior, named to the Daily Record’s “Player to Watch” List, in addition to receiving First Team All-Conference honors and Second Team All-County Team honors… Born Oct, 20, 1995… Daughter of Bob and Beth Ann Shalongo… Sister to Kelsey and Samantha.

Coach Savage on Jessica: “Jessica has a passion for this program and is excited to be a part of it. We look for her to work really hard this fall and develop into a true college pitcher. She has many quality tools already, but we are excited to help her polish those skills this fall and take her to the next level in the circle.”

Tiffany Taynor Shortstop/Pitcher

5-7 * Freshman

Edgewater, Fla. * New Smyrna Beach High School * AAU/Club Team: Lady Falcons 

Major: Undecided

Bio: Four-year varsity standout in softball, including being named Team Most Valuable Player three times… Is a three-time Daytona News Journal All-Area Team honoree… As a freshman, earned All-State Honorable Mention honors… During her sophomore season, received Orlando Sentinel All-Central Florida Honorable Mention recognition… As a junior, named Second Team All-State 7A/District… Heading into her senior season, held a career batting average of .411, while tallying 61 RBI and 34 stolen bases… Pitching wise, has tossed 270 innings with a 1.55 ERA and 240 strikeouts.

Coach Savage on Tiffany: “Tiffany is a very versatile athlete who has the ability to play any position, including pitch. She is a hard worker who comes from a good family and has tremendous potential. We look forward to seeing the hard work Tiffany is putting in this summer and how she will help to elevate our program.”
