Suspect Tries to Disarm Officer, Police Say

DOVER, Del. - Dover police have arrested a man accused of trying to disarm an officer attempting to take him into custody.

Police said that around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a reported domestic incident at a home on the 700 block of North West Street. According to police, 49-year-old David Kimmick was drunk and punched a woman in the face. Investigators said the fight happened during a family argument in which Kimmick threatened to kill the woman and her mother. Kimmick then locked himself inside the home.

According to police, officers tried to contact Kimmick for several minutes before he came to the front door of the home. Officers said that when they explained why they were there, Kimmick tried to shut the door on them. Police said the officers then tried to take Kimmick into custody and a struggle ensued.

Police said during the struggle, Kimmick tried three times to take an officer's gun from the holster in an attempt to disarm the officer. The officer got Kimmick to the ground and arrested him.

Kimmick was taken to a local hospital to undergo an evaluation for a medical condition. Police said that pending his release, he will be charged with third-degree assault, terroristic threatening, resisting arrest with force and attempting to remove a firearm from the possession of an officer.
