DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State University volleyball team has released its schedule for the 2014 season. The 25-match regular season slate includes nine home contests in Memorial Hall. The Hornets will open the 2014 season on the road at Syracuse in their second appearance in the Syracuse Invitational on August 30. DSU will also face Niagara (Aug. 30) and Temple (Aug. 31) in the tournament.
After a visit to Delaware on Sep. 2, the Hornets will compete in the Lafayette/Lehigh Tournament on Sep. 12-13. DSU will open the tournament at Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa., on Sep. 12 before taking on Lafayette and Marist in Easton, Pa., the following day.
The Hornets will play the first of two 2014 matches against Towson on Sep. 17 at Towson’s SECU Arena. The teams will also play at DSU on Oct. 21.
Delaware State’s 2014 home and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener is set for Sep. 24 against defending conference champ Hampton. The Hornets will visit Hampton on Nov. 7. DSU will also play home-and-home MEAC contests against UMES (home: Sep. 26; away: Oct. 19); Howard (away: Sep. 28; home: Oct. 26); Morgan State (home: Oct. 5; away: Nov. 2); Coppin State (home: Oct. 10; away: Oct. 31); and Norfolk State (home: Oct. 12; away: Nov. 9)
The Hornets will also welcome non-conference foes NJIT and Stonybrook to Memorial Hall this season. NJIT will visit Delaware State on Oct. 24. in the Hornets’ annual Dig Pink breast cancer awareness contest. Stonybrook will be the opponent for DSU’s 2014 home finale on Oct. 30.
Delaware State will play non-conference matches at NJIT (Oct. 3) and Rider (Oct. 8) this season. The 2014 MEAC Tournament is Nov. 14-16 at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md.
The Hornets were 2-22 overall and 0-12 in the MEAC in 2013. DSU second-year head coach Kisya Killingsworth expects to return 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad.
