13 Hawks Recognized for Academic Success


NORFOLK, Va.- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last week honored 159 student- athletes from its outdoor track & field teams for successes made in the classrooms. This honor is bestowed on sophomore, junior and senior athletes who have earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher and any transfer students who have completed one year or more at their academic institutions. Among the 159 student-athletes are 13 Hawks.

Among the Hawks honored are seniors George Chandler (Birdsnest, Va.), Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, Md.), Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica), Jazmine Holland (Glen Burnie, Md.), Alonzo Jarmon (Bowie, Md.) and Ramone Waite (Kingston, Jamaica). Juniors who were honored included Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica), and Nancy Yao (Riverdale, Md.), and sophomores included Evelyn Chappell (Bowie, Md.), Taylor Folk (Baltimore, Md), Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine?s, Jamaica), and Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.). ?

"I applaud our track and field student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2013-14 academic school year,"? said MEAC Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. "I would further like to thank the coaches and academic support staffs for their contributions to the academic success of our student-athletes."

The Hawks wrapped up their season this past weekend at the MEAC Championships, where the men finished fourth and the women finished ninth.

Those Hawks who qualified will compete at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. beginning on May 16.
