SEAFORD, Del.- All schools in the Seaford School District were placed on a precautionary lockdown Thursday afternoon after shots were fired near West Seaford Elementary.

Seaford police said that at around 1:30 p.m. officers responded to the area of Stein Highway and Sussex Avenue for a report of shots fired. The incident occurred in close proximity to West Seaford Elementary, which was having field day activities. The school was placed on lockdown until students were released to their parents.

Second grader Co'maryah Williams was outside when the gun shots rang out. "I heard shooting and then everybody tried to rush in the building so they won't get shooted," she said.

The rest of the district's schools were also placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, according to Seaford School District Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Smith. The superintendent also said a message was sent to parents in the district notifying them of the precautionary lockdown. The message also stated, "All schools are safe and operational."
Police said they determined through witnesses and further investigation that a possible Black Dodge bearing unknown Maryland registration and a possible silver Honda exchanged shots in the area of Stein Highway and Sussex Avenue. Seaford officers, assisted by Delaware State Police, checked the area with negative results. No injuries or damage was reported. No information was found to indicate the incident was related to any school activities, police said.

The Seaford Police Department is asking anyone with information about this incident to call (302) 629-6644 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333. Delaware Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
