Dover PD to Increase Patrols Memorial Day Weekend

Posted:
DOVER, Del.- Plans are underway to increase patrols across Dover this Memorial Day weekend, according to the Dover Police Department.

Police will look for traffic violations that include driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities urge people to drive responsibly, as Memorial Day weekend is one of the most dangerous times of the year to hit the road.

According to research compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which tracks car crash statistics, drunk driving fatalities are highest during the weekends of Memorial Day, Labor Day and Independence Day.

NHTSA reports 397 deaths from car accidents over Memorial Day Weekend in 2010, and 40 percent of these were alcohol-related.  As of May 13, 2014, the Dover Police Department made 53 DUI related arrests in the 2014 calendar year.  A total of 164 DUI related arrests were made in 2013.

Dover police said DUI violations become more prevalent as the weather warms up. By increasing enforcement during peak times and dates, the Dover Police Department hopes to decrease the number of DUI related crashes and fatalities on Dover roadways.
