CHURCH CREEK, Md.- Teachers and staff choose a Star student for each month based on their accomplishments as part of the South Dorchester School Character Counts Program.
The Star Character Counts program began during the 2013-2014 school year starting in September. The program nominates a student each month based on their behavior.
Each month the guidance counselor teaches a lesson to the students about a specific character pillar. The teachers and staff then pick the student of the month based on their exhibition of this character trait.
"I believe these lessons make the students more aware," South Dorchester Principal Jennifer Ruark told WBOC. "These lessons teach them how to handle situations throughout the day, and even the year."
April’s character trait is trustworthiness. The lesson for this month taught the students to be honest, don’t deceive, cheat, or steal and to be reliable, among many other attributes.
This program has made a huge impact on the students at this school and will continue throughout the years, Ruark remarked.
