Salisbury, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds have rattled off seven straight wins with a 7-2 victory over Hagerstown on Tuesday evening. Delmarva (30-21) earned another series win thanks to a tie-breaking three-run home run by Mike Yastrzemski in the seventh inning.
The night began with the brilliance of Sebastian Vader. The Shorebirds’ starter retired the first 13 batters he faced before Carlos Lopez knocked a double in the fifth inning. Vader picked up his sixth straight victory, improving to 7-1, tied for the league lead in wins.
Delmarva jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With a walk to Kemp and a single by Dosch, the Shorebirds set up an early run-scoring opportunity. Mancini cashed in with an RBI single to left, scoring Kemp for a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds doubled their advantage in the fifth inning. This time it was Jeff Kemp hooking a double down the right field line. Federico Castagnini motored around from first base to score.
Hagerstown brought the game to a deadlock with two runs in the seventh. Three consecutive singles by Lopez, Ward and Zebrack made it 2-1. Ward was then thrown out at home trying to score on a grounder to first base. Rafael Bautista delivered the game-tying single up the middle, but Medina was thrown out at third to take away a chance at a Suns’ lead.
With a quick response, Delmarva leapt back in front. Gregory Lorenzo roped a double to the left-center gap, and then Federico Castagnini reached on a sacrifice bunt. Hector Silvestre unsuccessfully tried to cut down Lorenzo at third. Yastrzemski then launched an opposite-field home run to left-center, his team-high sixth of the year.
Now leading 5-2, the Shorebirds upped their advantage with two more runs in the eighth. Back-to-back doubles by Austin Wynns and Conor Bierfeldt scored one run. Bierfeldt later scored on a wild pitch by David Ramos to make it 7-2.
Jon Keller pitched two scoreless innings in relief for his second save of the year. Sebastian Vader earned the win for Delmarva, while Suns’ starter Silvestre took home the defeat. With the seven-game winning streak, the Shorebirds have pulled within five games of the first-place Suns in the South Atlantic League Northern Division.
Delmarva will go for the series sweep over Hagerstown on Tuesday morning. Right-hander Luc Rennie (2-3, 5.57) will start for the Shorebirds against Suns’ right-hander Austin Voth (1-3, 2.42). First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 am at Perdue Stadium.
