LAUREL, Del. – Laurel High School was placed on a precautionary lockdown Monday morning after an unknown student used a schoolwide intercom to make a bogus claim that a shooter was in the building, officials said.

According to Principal Amber Deiter, a student was able to dial a code on a classroom phone to broadcast the announcement throughout the building. Deiter said Laurel police officers were in the building already, and placed the school on a brief lockdown, giving an all clear after a thorough search.

Laurel Police Chief Michael Wilson said the officers were in the building for a minor fight, which is a common occurrence. The announcement of a gunman came around 9:30 a.m., he said.

“The announcement was along the lines of, ‘There is a shooter in the building,’” Wilson said.

A call was put out and four officers swept the school. They were able to lift the lockdown in about 15 minutes, according to Wilson. He went on to say it was clear throughout the incident that there was no danger, as officers never noticed any unusual movements or sounds.

“It was pretty obvious that it was a prank, not a very good one,” he said.

An investigation is ongoing, but Wilson said there is no way to trace from which classroom the call originated. There are no suspects at this time, he said.
