SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Weather Technology, Inc. (AWT), a StormGeo company, today announced a partnership with KVH Industries, Inc. to deliver AWT's BVS high-resolution weather data via the KVH IP-MobileCastTM WEATHERlinkTM service.
AWT's BVS 7 weather forecasts and ocean data will be delivered to vessels at sea via KVH IP-MobileCast, a breakthrough service utilizing multicasting technology for a low fixed monthly fee. The data will be updated up to four times per day to help ships optimize voyage planning and safety.
The market leading BVS 7 voyage optimization system provides on-board and around-the-clock weather-routing information. KVH's IP-MobileCast content delivery service will provide captains access to BVS 7's global, high-resolution data for wind, waves, visibility and currents with tidal streams, as well as detailed port vicinity forecasts, updated pirate attack reports and rogue wave forecasts.
"As part of its global business strategy, AWT is partnering with leading maritime systems and service providers to be part of the integrated bridge systems of the future," said Haydn Jones, AWT CEO. "We are very pleased to be partnering with KVH, the world's market share leader in maritime VSAT. This is of particular importance as broadband installations are becoming increasingly common on commercial cargo carrying ships."
KVH's IP-MobileCast service utilizes multicasting technology to deliver large amounts of content to many ships at once, overcoming the prohibitively high satellite communications costs typically charged to deliver files for individual use. The new service is notable for technological advancements that enable the content to be delivered over the top of KVH's mini-VSAT Broadband network, while also ensuring that the multicasting transmission does not affect the vessel's mini-VSAT Broadband onboard data speed.
"Partnering with AWT to supply weather data for KVH's IP-MobileCast WEATHERlink ensures that we will deliver the most sophisticated weather data to our clients," said Martin Kits van Heyningen, KVH chief executive officer. "AWT is the proven market leader with more that 5000 installations of its BVS onboard voyage optimization system, helping ship officers make critical, weather sensitive decisions to enhance safety while improving fuel efficiency. This is of great importance as shipping companies evaluate options for reducing emissions and bunker costs."
The WEATHERlink content delivery is scheduled to begin beta testing this month and to be commercially available by September. All vessels with a KVH TracPhoneTM V-IP series satellite communication system onboard will support the BVS weather content after a free over-the-air software upgrade.
