EASTON, Md.- The Easton Police Department is searching for a wanted person who they say ran from a traffic stop early Thursday morning.

About 2:40 a.m., Easton Police say they stopped a red 2003 Dodge Durango for a speed violation. Police say initially the driver, identified as 26-year-old Michael Jerome Bernert, of Baltimore, stopped along Ocean Gateway near Talbot Humane, but then drove away after the officer stepped out of his patrol car and began to approach the stopped car. Police say Bernert drove to Idlewild Avenue, then turned and stopped at the end of a dead end street before getting out of the car and running away.

Police say an adult female passenger remained seated in the vehicle.

Other officers responded and began to search for the driver without immediate success.

After officers notified area 24-hour businesses along Ocean Gateway, employees at Royal Farms reported that the suspect may have just left the rear of their store around 3:40 a.m. A further search was conducted with the assistance of the Maryland State Police aviation, Troopers, and Talbot County Deputies without success.

Officers say Bernert was last seen wearing tan shorts, an orange t-shirt, and a black hat which they say could be both Baltimore Orioles apparel.

Police say Bernert is wanted for failing to appear for assault charges.

Bernert's whereabouts are still unknown and police are still searching for him. If observed, police say be cautious and contact police at (410) 822-1111. They say there is no evidence to suggest that Bernert is armed.
