HURLOCK, Md.- The North Dorchester Middle School National Junior Honor Society participated in the Dorchester County Relay for Life as its group service project for the year on May 16.
Throughout the spring semester, NJHS students coordinated fundraisers and participated in many events to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Rigney and Ms. Gibbs helped to advice the NDMS National Junior Honor Society.
The students held a Jellybean Counting Contest, sponsored a school-wide Hat Day, contributed items to the Relay for Life Auction at Foxwell’s, collected donations from friends and family and assisted in the NDMS Relay for Life Dance.
In total, NJHS students were successful in raising a total of $891.98 for the American Cancer Society Dorchester County Relay for Life.
"We were very limited on time for various circumstances," Gibbs said. "I give the students such tremendous credit for a fantastic job, and if continued in the future, would like to spend more time fundraising for this event."
The highlight was having so many students attend the Relay for Life event at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. They were present for the opening ceremonies and walked the track until midnight.
The students had a great time while raising money for an important cause. Many students have been personally touched by knowing someone with cancer.
"Many students know people who have been affected by cancer so I believe this experience was very real for them," Gibbs noted. "It was great how they were all able to get together and collaborate."
