DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - A Delaware City firefighter has been charged with negligence after a rescue boat struck a rock jetty in the Delaware River, injuring three.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control announced Wednesday that the rescue boat's operator, 62-year-old Edward Kalinowski, was charged for operating at excessive speed. Kalinowski is president of the Delaware City Fire Company.

The crash happened early Wednesday when the company's largest boat was searching for a missing vessel. The rescue boat hit the rock getty and began sinking.

Kalinowski suffered a broken ankle in the accident. Two other crew members also were injured.

The vessel that was thought to be missing was later found safe on Delaware Bay.
