Millsboro Man Hopes to Reunite Honor Flag with its Rightful Owners

Posted:

MILLSBORO, Del.- Each year we lose countless men and women in the line of duty. These brave souls risk their lives when they give the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.  One of the ways these individuals are honored is by giving the family an honor flag.

Darrell Dill of Millsboro was surprised to find an honor flag sitting on the side of Route 13 near Redden Road.

Dill says he did not know at first what it was. But his curiosity got the best of him. When he pulled over to see what was on the side of the road, he was shocked to see what he had found.

"It’s a memento to their dedication and service to this country and the way our country honors them,” said Dill.

Since he first discovered the honor flag, he became determined to find its owner.

"It’s a patriotic duty. This person at some time answered the call of duty in their life so we can all live free,” said Dill. “To me we owe them a debt of gratitude and it's the least I could do is to get this back to their family or their loved ones."

The honor flag was found along Route 13 going northbound by Redden Road near Bridgeville. The popularity of the road makes it difficult to pinpoint where the owner is from or where they were going at the time the flag was lost. But Dill feels for the family and hopes to reunite the flag with its rightful owner.

"I tried to put myself in the position of the person who had lost it,” said Dill. “I can't imagine the horror and disappointment that they've lost something of significant importance of their life."

Dill says if he cannot find the owner on his own, he plans on giving the flag to the Delaware Veterans Administration officer where he hopes they can have better luck finding its owner.
