Smyrna Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

SMYRNA, Del.- Smyrna police say a driver stopped Tuesday for a cellphone violation ended up being arrested on multiple drug charges.  

Authorities said an officer stopped 19-year-old Nafis A. Shakir, of Smyrna, on Route 13 at around 6 p.m. and detected an odor of marijuana coming from his vehicle, then noticed flakes of marijuana on his shirt and seat as he was getting out of the vehicle. An ensuing search of the vehicle uncovered 39 oxycodone pills, suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Shakir was charged with manufacture, deliver, possess with intent to deliver a controlled substance in a Tier 2 quantity with an aggravating factor, possession of marijuana with an aggravating factor, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended or revoked and driving while using an electronic communication device. 

After being presented via video phone at Justice of the Peace Court #2, Shakir was ordered held in the James T. Vaughn Correction Center in default of a $20,051 cash-only bond. Police said Shakir was out on bail on separate drug charges when he was arrested Tuesday, and that bail was revoked.
