Mayoral Candidates Voice Vision Ahead of Crisfield's City Election

Posted:
CRISFIELD, Md.- The city of Crisfield is just two days away from new leadership. The Crisfield City election is Wednesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Five people are running for mayor, and six candidates are running for council. Council member Kimberly Lawson, Charles Lehrer, Jordan Bo Joyner, Irving Saltz and Terry Dize are in the runoff for mayor.

The winner of the race will replace two-term Mayor Percy J. Purnell who decided to retire from city politics, and run for the District 38A seat in the House of Delegates.

Three at-large council seats are up for grabs. Those seats belong to Raymond Anderson, Kimberly Lawson and Mark Konapelsky.

Konapelsky is running for his seat. Other candidates for council seats are Paul Eric Emely, Cindy Freeman, Anthony Jackson, David Marquis and Charlotte Scott.

All of the candidates spoke about their vision for Crisfield, and spoke about ways to bring more business and revenue to the city.

Lehrer said he wants to attract more people to the community, 10,000 newcomers to be exact.

" I know it's going to be hard to do, but we need the people, we need the businesses, we need to clean this town up, fill the pot holes, paint the stores, clean them up, lower rents,” Lehrer said.

Lawson said the way to achieve the goal of bringing more people to the community is to increase business.

" The downtown area from the depot up until about Seventh Street has got to be a key place to do that, “ Lawson said. “That's why people come to Crisfield and what people in Crisfield most love about our community is our waterfront.”

Joyner wants to revitalize Main Street, which he said will help spur job growth.

"We need to concentrate on jobs in Crisfield. We can do that by bringing companies in to look at our town," Joyner said. "We have a lot to offer in Crisfield."

Candidate Irving Saltz was unavailable for comment following the open forum, and Dize was not present.
