UMES Student Sworn Into Office as Commissioner in Princess Anne

Posted:
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The youngest elected town official was sworn into office at the Garland Hayward Youth Center today.

A senior at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 23-year-old Lionel Frederic is a musician, entrepreneur and Princess Anne's new at-large town commissioner.

"It feels pretty good. I'm very fortunate for the support I've received," Frederic said. "I've had a very warm welcome from the town and all of its residents. I'm very happy for the outcome."

Lionel garnered 127 votes, ousting former town manager and commissioner, Jay Park who ran against him. Parker received 93 votes. Some residents in the town said it was time for change.

"I voted for Lionel because he's a younger guy, and I think he can make a difference in the town of Princess Anne," Phillips said.

Lionel is a biology major at UMES and is the owner of the Princess Anne Car Wash. He opened the business two years ago after saving money from a previous internship at Howard University. When Lionel is not busy running the Princess Anne Car Wash, he said he is busy thinking of ways to make the town better. He spoke about his goals.

"I just plan on lowering the taxes, bringing new creative ideas, a recycle plan, creating jobs and also keeping in the mind the poor folks; people who are actually struggling to keep the town going,"Lionel said.

Craig Smith lives in the town and is excited about new leadership.

"I feel proud, especially as a young minority in the neighborhood. I feel like in his[ Lionel] youthfulness, he can relate to the youth community, " Smith said. " With him becoming educated and going to college and expanding into politics, it makes me joyful to know that his education can help correspond with the older generation."

Lionel plans to attend medical school after he graduates from UMES.
He was sworn in at 5:30 p.m. at the Garland Hayward Youth Center in Princess Anne.
