5 Things to Know About Maryland Primaries

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland voters are casting ballots Tuesday in primaries for governor, attorney general, seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the state's General Assembly.

Here are five things to know about election day in Maryland:

1. GOVENOR'S RACE

In the Democratic primary, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler and Del. Heather Mizeur are running to be the party's nominee in the governor's race. In the Republican primary, Larry Hogan, David Craig, Charles Lollar and Ron George are seeking the GOP nomination. Polls have shown Brown and Hogan to be the front-runners.

1. ATTORNEY GENERAL

Del. Jon Cardin, state Sen. Brian Frosh and Del. Aisha Braveboy are running in the Democratic primary. It could be the closest statewide race. Republican Jeffrey Pritzker is unchallenged.

1. U.S. HOUSE RACES

There are primary races for all eight of Maryland's U.S. House districts, although two incumbent Democrats, Rep. Steny Hoyer and Rep. John Delaney, are unchallenged. Other incumbents are not expected to face close primary challenges. Maryland Democrats currently hold a 7-1 advantage in House seats.

1. VOTER ID

Some first-time voters in Maryland will be asked to show identification before voting. This can include a copy of a current and valid photo ID, such as a Maryland driver's license; a Motor Vehicle Administration-issued ID card; a student, employee, or military ID card; U.S. passport, or any other state or federal government-issued ID card. Other documents can include a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document within three months of the election that shows your name and address.

1. POLL HOURS

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be 1,605 polling places around the state.
