BALTIMORE (WBOC/AP)- Incumbent Maryland Sen. Richard Colburn has lost in the Republican Senate primary race.

Del. Adelaide Eckardt defeated Colburn in District 37, which includes Talbot County, as well as parts of Dorchester, Caroline and Wicomico counties. Colburn has held the seat since 1995. Eckardt has served in the House for the same period.

On the Western Shore, Sen. David Brinkley, the Senate minority leader, lost his primary race to Del. Michael Hough in a western Maryland district that includes much of Frederick County and some of Carroll County.

Hough is finishing his first term in the House of Delegates. Hough campaigned as the more conservative candidate.
