Delmarva World Cup fans cheer on Team USA

Posted:

SALISBURY, Md.- As Team USA hit the field, fans here on Delmarva were tuned in. It’s the middle of the day on a Thursday afternoon but that didn’t seem to matter.

“My plans were to watch this game with everybody,” said Gavin Townsend of Salisbury.

Townsend like many others on Delmarva was glued to the set. He figured it would be a good one.

“It’s pretty big. Especially since it’s Germany,” said Townsend. “They’re a pretty good team.”

One by one fans made their way to local sports bars like the Greene Turtle. But forget the green. Today’s colors were all about the red, white and blue.

Restaurants and bars weren’t the only places you could find world cup fans. Many of them gathered right at Salisbury University to watch the big match up.

Even kids at this soccer camp were tuned in.

“Oh it’s my whole life,” said 8-year-old Reese Moleno who was one of the campers watching the match.

“It’s very big,” said another camper, 11-year-old Eric Horsey. “I mean people like they’re all over the world. It’s like the whole world unties for this one thing and that’s just big.”

Young eyes focused on the world stage hoping to learn a thing or two.

“I mean it helps us when we play the game so we could try out new tricks we learned by watching the game,” said Horsey.

But behind every dark cloud is a silver lining. Even though team USA lost today, they move on in the tournament. And these kids will be cheering them on every step of the way.

“Because we live in the USA,” said Moleno.
