DELMAR, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a motorcycle crash near Delmar that killed one person and seriously injured another.

Police said that shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday a 60-year-old Delmar man was operating a motorcycle on Sussex Highway approximately a quarter mile north of Iron Hill Road. Troopers said that is when what is believed to have been an unknown vehicle may have pulled out in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle operator locked the brakes and tried to avoid crashing but both the motorcycle operator and a woman passenger were ejected onto the roadway, investigators said.

Police said that shortly after the crash, a Honda Accord traveling on Sussex Highway partially ran over the female victim, who was apparently unconscious in the right lane.

The female motorcycle passenger, identified as a 48-year-old Delmar woman, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The motorcycle operator was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury where he is in serious condition.

Troopers said the operator of the Honda Accord, Richard N. Jones, 32, of Delmar, was properly restrained and uninjured.
The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into the collision and investigators are trying to determine if a non-contact vehicle contributed to the initial crash. Police also said the preliminary investigation suggests alcohol is believed to be a factor on behalf of the motorcycle operator.
The names of the motorcycle riders are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
