Seasonal Police Officer Applicants Down in Sussex County

Posted:
DEWEY BEACH, Del. - Seasonal Police Officers are at a minimum this year in Sussex County.

Seasonal officers are part-time officers who help full-time officers during the summer months when the population swells with incoming tourists. Seasonal officers are popular in coastal resort communities, like Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach. However, officers there says applications for seasonal officers this year are down.

Dewey Beach currently has 23 seasonal officers, but Sgt. Cliff Dempsey of the Dewey Beach Police Department says less people are trying to join the force.

"The seasonal staff is necessary, and we depend greatly on them," says Sgt. Dempsey. "They are our backbone in the summer time. They're handling most of our complaints."

Despite being part-time, the seasonal officers still make plenty of arrests.

"We constantly watch over them and assist them through their criminal arrests and through their local ordinance arrests, and we make sure the job's properly being done," says Sgt. Dempsey. "We couldn't do it without them."

Dempsey says the department may look into raising salaries in order to attract more applicants, if this trend continues in Sussex County.
