Afternoon Victory Gives Shorebirds Series Win

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- The Delmarva Shorebirds' relievers combined for four innings of no-hit pitching Wednesday afternoon, securing the Shorebirds (11-10) their second straight 3-2 victory over the West Virginia Power.

After both teams notched a run in each of the first two innings, Shorebirds second baseman Anthony Caronia lifted a single to left field in the fourth, scoring Jared Breen, and putting Delmarva on top, 3-2.

After battling through the first two frames, Delmarva starter Luis Gonzalez fired three scoreless innings before giving way to Garret Cortright, who shut West Virginia out over three perfect innings. Reliever Austin Corbin collected the save with three groundball outs in the ninth.

The victory pushed Gonzalez's record to 4-0 on the season, and gave Delmarva the three game series victory over the Power.

The Shorebirds now travel to New Jersey for a four game set with the Lakewood BlueClaws. Nick Cunningham will start the series for Delmarva, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Thursday at FirstEnergy Park.
