WILMINGTON, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware Department of Transportation officials say a portion of the closed Interstate 495 bridge may reopen ahead of schedule, weeks before Labor Day.

Officials announced the development Wednesday. The bridge, which typically carries about 90,000 vehicles daily, was closed June 2 after officials learned several columns were tilting.

Temporary repairs had been expected to be complete by Labor Day, but on Wednesday officials said the southbound lanes could reopen before then. DelDOT did not give a specific date.

The department said crews are nearing completion of underground foundations that will be used to temporarily support the bridge and getting ready for the next phase of work.

“I am deeply impressed by the professionalism and 'can-do' spirit of everyone involved in this project,” said DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt. “It is evident from the pace of construction that the entire team has been seamlessly moving from one stage of work to the next, while also conducting operations simultaneously.  During my frequent visits to the site, I’m impressed at how well coordinated and efficient everyone is working.”
