Rehoboth Tree Ordinance Would Require More Shade Trees

Posted:
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -  The Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission will discuss a proposed tree ordinance at Friday's meeting.

This new version has the same goal as the previous ordinance from 2006. According to Commission Chair Preston Littleton, it is an attempt to increase and maintain the tree canopy in Rehoboth Beach.

Previously, the ordinance required owners of property 5,000 square feet or more to have three trees in their yard. The new ordinance would specify the trees must be shade trees, or 30 feet or taller.

While many homes do already have many big trees, some areas are lacking, like in Country Club Estates. Sylvia Williams lives there, and said she agrees with the requirement.

"Well I'm not quite sure if that is doable in some of the yards," she explained. "But I like the requirement to have greenery and the trees, it gives in more of a neighborhood feel."

Joseph Schanno on the other hand said that it should be his choice whether he wants trees or not.

"If I want to have that so it looks like a bit of a dessert scene that's my privilege," he said. "I dont want anybody to tell me I have to plant three of these trees, three of other trees, I resent the fact that the governments come in here and telling us what I have to plant."

However, Mary E. Rash, the owner of Farmer Girl Exotic Gardens, said she thinks the ordinance would benefit more than just the visual aspect.

"Well it cools your house, makes your exterior more beautiful, its just nice for animals," she said. "It's good for everything really"

Littleton said he would like the Planning Commission can officially approve the ordinance at Friday's 6:30pm meeting, but there is a possibility more recommendations will be added. He then said he hopes it can be transmitted to the City Commission as soon as possible.
