SALISBURY, Md.- Police say they have arrested a 23-year-old man for attempted murder and related charges following accusations that he beat his girlfriend so severely outside a Salisbury apartment complex that she lost consciousness.

According to the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, shortly before 2 a.m. Friday,  a deputy responded to an apartment complex on the 1000 block of Beaglin Park Drive in Salisbury after receiving reports of a male beating a female who was on the ground. Investigators said that when the deputy arrived on the scene, he observed a man, later identified as William Donophan, of Delmar, Del., standing over a female who was not moving. Police said that upon realizing that a deputy had just arrived, Donophan attempted to walk away and hide before attempting to run away when the deputy spotted him.

Police said the deputy chased Donophan through the complex, across Beaglin Park Drive and onto the property of Parkside High School where the deputy caught up with Donophan and took him into custody.

The victim was unconscious and suffering from trauma to her head and was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries, the Sheriff's Office said.

Police said that during the investigation, it was determined that Donophan struck and kicked the victim repeatedly in the head to the point where she collapsed and loss consciousness. It was also discovered that Donophan was the victim’s boyfriend, investigators noted.

In addition to attempted murder, Donophan was charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. He was ordered held in the Wicomico County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bond.
