Obama to Discuss Infrastructure in Delaware Visit

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - President Obama is visiting Delaware this week to talk about increased investment in America's transportation infrastructure.

The White House says Obama will announce a new initiative to increase private-sector investment in the country's infrastructure during a visit to the Port of Wilmington on Thursday.

The port is just a few hundred yards away from the Interstate 495 bridge over the Christina River. The federal government is helping pay for repairs to the bridge, which state officials ordered closed last month because several supporting columns were tilting.

Recent inspections found no major problems with the bridge.

State officials say the damage was caused when a contractor dumped a large mountain of dirt next to the bridge and the weight of the dirt caused the ground underneath it to shift.
