FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police say a National Security Agency police officer was injured when a driver fled a traffic stop and initiated a highway chase.

Police say 32-year-old Darnell David Hawkins Jr. was stopped by NSA officers Wednesday morning as he approached a checkpoint on Route 32 in Anne Arundel County. The highway cuts through Fort Meade, where the NSA campus is located.

Police say Hawkins drove off from a staging area, injuring an NSA officer and nearly striking a barricade.

Maryland State Police troopers then pursued Hawkins on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and arrested him. He was charged with attempting to elude police.
