Obama to Discuss Infrastructure in Delaware Visit

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - President Barack Obama is visiting Delaware to talk about increasing private sector investment in America's transportation infrastructure.

Obama plans to discuss his initiative Thursday in a speech at the Port of Wilmington, where the Interstate 495 bridge over the Christina River will serve as a backdrop. Gov. Jack Markell also plans to speak.

The federal government is helping pay for repairs to the bridge, which state officials ordered closed on an emergency basis last month because several supporting columns were tilting.

Recent inspections found no major problems with the bridge itself. State officials instead say the damage was caused when a contractor, without their knowledge, dumped a large mountain of dirt next to the bridge, and the weight of the dirt caused the ground underneath it to shift.
