Woman Hospitalized After Lewes Area Crash

Posted:
LEWES, Del.- Delaware State Police say a 21-year-old woman sustained critical injuries after the car she was driving struck a utility pole west of Lewes early Thursday morning.

Troopers said the incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. as Abigail K. Cellini, of Milford, was operating a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo westbound on Fisher Road just east of Hopkins Road. Police said that for unknown reasons, the car drove off the north side of the roadway and struck a utility pole on the driver's side before coming to a stop.

Police said Cellini, who was wearing a seat belt, was extricated from the vehicle by EMS and initially transported to Beebe Medical Center and later flown to Christiana Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Troopers said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Fisher Road east of Hopkins Road was closed for approximately two hours after the crash while utility crews repaired the pole.
