Fanfare Planned for Long-Awaited Silver Line Debut

Posted: Updated:

RESTON, Va. (AP) - Riders, get ready: The Silver Line is finally ready for its debut.

Metro expects the debut train to depart from the new Reston station at noon Saturday.

Before that, fanfare: U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and District of Columbia Vincent Gray are expected for a ribbon-cutting ceremony preceding the departure.

The $2.9 billion first phase of the Silver Line includes five stations and will stretch from Reston through Tysons Corner. Work is just beginning on the next phase, which will carry the Silver Line to Dulles International Airport and beyond, at an additional cost of $2.7 billion.

The Silver Line has been planned for decades; the project was nearly scuttled at various times as numerous roadblocks emerged in the process.
