HICKORY, N.C.– The Delmarva Shorebirds lost to the Hickory Crawdads 3-2 on Monday, making this game the team’s fourth consecutive loss, according to Shorebird officials.
The Shorebirds began the game with a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Creede Simpson and Chance Sisco hit singles to put them on bases, before Conor Bierfeldt hit an RBI double to bring a run. A wild pitch then sent Sisco home.
Shorebirds pitcher Steven Brault retired 11 batters in a row and matched his career-high nine strikeouts until the sixth inning, where he walked Zach Cone and gave an RBI double to Crawdads player Kellin Deglan. The Shorebirds relieved the pitcher and sent in Dylan Rheault.
Crawdads batter Travis Demeritte hit a double and Luis Marte hit an RBI single, bring the game to a tie in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Crawdads batter Nomar Mazara hit his 19th home run of the season, giving Hickory the lead, 3-2.
Jose Valdespina pitched a perfect ninth inning for the Crawdads, giving them the win.
The series finale is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, N.C.
