DOVER, Del. (WBOC)- DUI saturation patrols will be conducted this weekend by Harrington and Seaford police as part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign.

According to the Office of Highway Safety, 88 people were arrested for DUI in Delaware last week, bringing the total DUI arrests statewide to 2,330 for 2014. Forty percent of the 76 fatal crashes this year were alcohol related.

“It’s very important that we all do our part, there’s been a lot of fatalities the earlier part of this year and we need to step up our efforts to make sure the appropriate actions are taken for the people who decide to drink and drive,” said Capt. Gary Flood of the Seaford Police Department.

Checkpoint Strikeforce is a regional sobriety checkpoint campaign aimed at cracking down on DUI offenders by using high visibility enforcement to deter those who would choose to drink and drive. The campaign involves setting up weekly DUI checkpoints statewide. It runs for six months through New Year’s Eve.

A DUI checkpoint conducted by the Delaware State Police is also scheduled for Friday in Newark.
